If you’ve shopped for colorful rugs or cozy bedding online, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the name Annie Selke. The brand’s cheerful housewares and famous lines like Dash & Albert or Pine Cone Hill have loyal fans. Lately, though, there’s been a lot of chatter are they going out of business? The answer is no, Annie Selke is not shutting down overall, but things are definitely changing. Here’s what’s really happening, why the rumors started, and what it all means if you love their products.

What’s Actually Happening with Annie Selke?

The big news is that Annie Selke, which started and grew in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, is going through a major transition. The company isn’t disappearing, but its Massachusetts roots are getting cut. Rugs USA, which bought Annie Selke back in 2023, is shutting down its Pittsfield headquarters and the only Annie Selke retail store in Lenox by the end of 2024. This isn’t about bankruptcy or liquidation, but it’s a serious shift about 47 jobs will be lost because of the move, including the CEO’s role.

It makes sense that rumors started. When a much-loved local company closes up shop in its hometown, people naturally wonder if that’s the end. But what’s really happening is more of a consolidation Rugs USA is keeping the Annie Selke brand alive, just running it from somewhere else.

Why Are Offices and Stores Closing?

This isn’t the first round of changes since the acquisition. When Rugs USA took over, there were already layoffs at the local warehouse. Then in September 2024, Rugs USA filed what’s called a WARN notice a legal requirement when a company plans to let a significant number of people go. Employees were told a few days later that almost all the remaining Massachusetts positions, including the CEO and major roles across management and design, would end by December 31, 2024.

Rugs USA said it’s all about operating more efficiently. There’s a lot of pressure in the home décor and e-commerce industries right now costs are up, demand can be unpredictable, and keeping separate offices just doesn’t make sense for them anymore. They’re folding all Annie Selke operations into their existing offices, which means no more corporate presence in the Berkshires.

For many of the people who built the Annie Selke brand, this is a tough reality. These are jobs that have been part of the local economy for decades, from the warehouse team (many of whom lost jobs right after the 2023 sale) to designers, web folks, human resources, and more.

How Are Employees and The Community Coping?

Big layoffs like this hit more than just the people who worked at the company. Local leaders in Berkshire County raised real concerns losing nearly 50 good jobs isn’t easy for a small area. The impact goes beyond Annie Selke itself, affecting families, local spending, and the small town feeling where people know each other by name.

According to the WARN notice, employees were officially told on September 10, 2024. After that meeting, the company and Massachusetts state agencies started helping people transition. The state’s MassHire program is providing job placement, help with resumes, and other support so folks can land on their feet. For warehouse workers let go after the acquisition last year, similar support was available, but there’s no sugarcoating the fact that change like this carries a real cost for the Berkshires.

It’s a reminder that when companies get bought out, even by other big brands, it can mean real-life disruption for teams who’ve been there for years.

What’s Rugs USA Trying to Do?

So why make these cuts right now? Rugs USA told employees and reporters it comes down to streamlining. They want to maximize what’s working and “consolidate both brands into our core operating footprint.” That’s business speak for “run everything from one place instead of two or three.”

This isn’t unusual lots of companies tighten up after a buyout to avoid duplication of jobs, systems, and overhead. Rugs USA made it clear they’ll keep selling every Annie Selke brand: Pine Cone Hill bedding, Dash & Albert rugs, and all the signature décor. Those lines will stay front and center, both online at annieselke.com and alongside their main Rugs USA brand and the NuLoom collection.

The layoffs, according to Rugs USA, are about focusing on growth and weathering a tough market. Home decoration demand changed a lot after the pandemic (remember when everyone was buying new furniture and rug sets in 2020?) and now companies are trying to adapt. Rugs USA said they’re “committed to supporting team members impacted” through this transition, though, for many, this is cold comfort.

Are Annie Selke’s Products Still Available?

Here’s the good news for fans: Annie Selke’s online store isn’t going anywhere. If you go to annieselke.com today, everything is still stocked rugs, throws, sheets, and those colorful accessories. Dash & Albert and Pine Cone Hill, the two best-known brands under the Annie Selke umbrella, are both active and updated with new arrivals.

Nothing about the website signals a going-out-of-business sale or a winding-down operation. The brand’s social media channels are also up and running. Plenty of items are sold both on Annie Selke’s site and through big retailers, which suggests the business isn’t shrinking into nothingness even as some roles disappear behind the scenes.

If you’re used to shopping in person at their Lenox boutique, though, get your visits in before December 31, 2024. After that, Annie Selke will be an online-only brand, at least for now.

What About Annie Selke’s Reputation?

Part of what made Annie Selke popular was its Massachusetts vibe and the idea that you were supporting a smaller American business. Losing the physical presence in the Berkshires stings if you liked that connection. However, the new owners aren’t ditching the brand; they just see it as part of a bigger national operation now.

From a business perspective, Rugs USA seems happy with how things have gone since the buyout. The company said that, after the 2023 acquisition, they figured out how to run things together, optimizing shipping, inventory, and technology. By their own count, those changes pushed the acquired brand’s performance to more than 60 percent better than their original mergers and acquisitions goals.

That kind of synergy (which just means “working together more efficiently”) tells you Annie Selke’s future under Rugs USA isn’t bleak. It’s more about shifting resources and changing how things work. For most shoppers, the transition will probably feel invisible they’ll keep seeing the same site, collections, and possibly even the same style of product launches.

What Should You Expect if You’re a Customer or Fan?

Most of us just want the bottom line: can we still buy Annie Selke stuff? Yes. You’ll still find all those familiar products rugs, linens, accent pieces on the website and in the places you usually shop.

If you live in the Berkshires or you’re one of the employees facing a layoff, this doesn’t feel like a smooth handover, and the sense of loss is real. But from a business perspective, the Annie Selke brand is alive and moving forward. If you’re curious about “business as usual” after an acquisition, Annie Selke is close to a textbook example. The brand persists, just under a new umbrella.

As for how all of this fits into broader business trends, it’s a reminder of how even well-loved brands face tough choices in today’s retail scene. Mergers and acquisitions almost always bring shifts, some visible and some that happen quietly in boardrooms and warehouses far from customers.

Where Do Things Stand as of Fall 2024?

To wrap up: Annie Selke is definitely not going out of business, even though its Massachusetts operations, including the retail shop and corporate office, will be gone by New Year’s Day 2025. Rugs USA is keeping the Annie Selke, Pine Cone Hill, and Dash & Albert product lines up and running. They say they’ve exceeded their business targets since buying the brand and plan to keep boosting sales and streamlining distribution.

While the end of local jobs hurts in the Berkshires, there’s state help for employees, and the company is promising a smooth transition for fans and customers.
